Pity Us (and other devotionals)

By accepting the world’s values, thinking its thoughts and adopting its ways we have dimmed the glory that shines overhead. We have not been able to bring earth to the judgment of heaven so we have brought heaven to the judgment of the earth. Pity us, Lord, for we know not what we do!‪#‎Tozer‬

"When you are tempted to doubt the faithfulness of God, cry out, "Get thee hence, Satan." Though you cannot now harmonize God’s mysterious dealings with the avowals of His love, wait on Him for more light. In His own good time He will make it plain to you. "What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter" (John 13:7). The sequel will demonstrate that God has neither forsaken nor deceived His child. "And therefore will the LORD wait that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him" (Isa. 30:18)."
"Judge not the Lord by feeble sense
But trust Him for His grace,
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.
Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take,
The clouds ye so much dread,
Are rich with mercy, and shall break
In blessing o’er your head."
~ Arthur Pink, "Gleanings in the Godhead - The Faithfulness of God"

" Oh how big and broad and comprehensive and wonderful is the work of Christ. The way of the cross is still the path to spiritual power. So do not hide from it and do not allow yourself to be patted to sleep in a comfortable church, void of power and barren of fruit ! " A. W. Tozer

As we arrive at 1 Samuel 21 we get a picture of David's first days of many running from Saul. He is in distress with no food or weapons, and even goes to the Philistine city of Gath. His situation is pretty awful. Yet through it all, he continues to trust God and look to Him alone. We see this wonderfully in Psalm 56 which David wrote in response to his experience in Gath. I love how verses 8-11 demonstrate how God's peace can be ours in the middle of our chaos.

How do you respond when life seems to spin out of control? Do you believe that God is for you ("This I know, that God is for me." Psalm 56:9)? What's one thing you learned from David in Psalm 56? Tami

Hypocritical Prayer

BIBLE MEDITATION:
“I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession…” Daniel 9:4

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
The greatest thing we can do for America is to pray for America. I am convinced if there were ever a need for prayer, this is the hour. It’s one thing to criticize that our children cannot pray in school. But I think it is unmitigated hypocrisy to carp and criticize about children not being able to pray in school unless we ourselves are prayer warriors, don’t you? We must teach our children to pray in the home. We are unvarnished hypocrites to criticize, yet not teach our children to pray—by both gentle instruction and by example. Our children are watching us and will model our behavior.

ACTION POINT:
Teach your children how to pray in the home. Take them beyond “Now I lay me down to sleep.” We rattle off our little prayers. But have you really set your face to pray?
